PEACE FIELD PROJECT PEACE PITCH TWINNING EVENT
FRIDAY 20th JUNE 2025
Maureen Sanford, Community Worker, Sue Palmer, Author and CFA Patron (centre), presented Beeslack Community High School (BCHS) with their Peace Field Project plaque which officially twins the School’s designated area of play with Flanders Peace Field Peace Pitch, Mesen, Belgium, site of the 1914 First World War Christmas truces. Susan Semple, BCHS Peace Field Project Manager (right), said, ‘The day was a fantastic event’.
‘It was a real privilege to attend Beeslack Community School’s celebration of their year-long Peace Project. Students reported on their visit to Belgium to learn about the First World War Christmas truce, interviews with the soldiers of Glencorse Barracks about their work for peace, the school’s Peace Walk and the messages on Beeslack’s beautiful Peace Tree. I was delighted to present them with a Peace Field Project Plaque on behalf of the CFA.‘. Sue Palmer, CFA Patron.
Beeslack Community High School was established in 1984. It serves the northern tip of Penicuik and its surrounding areas. Our current role is around 750 pupils. As a relatively small school, we know our pupils well and positive relationships are consistently identified as one of our key strengths. We have strong relationships with our associated primary schools (Bilston Primary; Mauricewood Primary and Roslin Primary) and we work closely with them to ensure pupils experience a smooth transition from primary school to high school. We also have a number of pupils from out with catchment, all of which makes for a diverse and close-knit school community. At Beeslack we have a saying that encapsulates this sense of community and togetherness: ‘Once at Beeslack, always at Beeslack.’
