Walter Tull’s Football Career by Charlie Gibson

Posted on February 6, 2014 by MD Posted in Herne Bay High School .

Walter Tull, the son of a Bajan carpenter and a local Kent woman was born in Folkestone in 1888. After the death of his parents, Tull was brought up in a National Children’s Home orphanage in Bethnal Green with his brother Edward.

Tull’s footballing talents were quickly spotted and he was signed by Tottenham Hotspur in time for their joint tour of South America with Everton FC. Returning to England, Tull became the first outfield black player to play professional League football, making his debut for Tottenham in September 1909 at inside forward against Sunderland. His career at Tottenham was marred by racial abuse aimed at him by rival supporters. One match in particular against Bristol City, whose supporters used horrible language. His three years at Tottenham saw him make 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring 7 goals.

Herbert Chapman’s Northampton Town bought Tull in October 1911. Tull made 110 first-team appearances for the club. When the First World War broke out Tull enlisted in the army, the first Northampton Town player to do so. It was reported in newspapers that Tull had signed to play for the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers once the war was over. Tull never got the chance to play for Rangers, as he was killed in action shortly before the war finished, having been promoted to an officer, and the first black man in British Army history to have been so and despite standing orders prohibiting Blacks to become officers in the Army. Thus ended the life of a truly remarkable man, both on and off the football field.

Why sould we Remember Walter Tull?

Posted on February 6, 2014 by MD Posted in Herne Bay High School .

Millatry crossWalter TullWe should remember Walter Tull because of his outstanding efforts in World War One which got him recommend for the Military cross. He led his men on dangerous missions behind enemy lines and return without loss or injury. He sacrificed his life for the British Government.

He was the first black man to become an officer because military law forbade man not of ‘pure European descent’. Walter Tull was also Britain’s first black professional football player.

He shows that you can achieve so much in one life time and it doesn’t matter about your differences.

Christmas Truce Facts By Charlotte Evans

Postcard

A postcard from WW1

When did it happen?
December 1914
Where did it happen?
The land between the British
and German trenches
(No-man’s land)

Contents of a Christmas Box

What was it?
The British and German soldiers played a game of football.
The many letters from soldiers who took part are more than sufficient evidence. Many of these letters were published in the soldier’s local paper – usually taken in to the paper by astonished families.

Walter Tull’s Legacy

Posted on February 6, 2014 by MD Posted in Herne Bay High School .

There was a petition to give Walter Tull a posthumously Military cross which he was recommended for by his commanding officer, Major general Sir Sydney Lawford. Unusually for officers with his service record and commendation he never received the Military cross. The manual of Military Law forbade men not of ‘pure European descent’ from becoming officers. The partition had 3,029 signatures and closed on the 6th November 2013.

He was cited for his gallantry and coolness under fire because he led his men on dangerous missions behind enemy lines and return without loss or injury.

Walter was the first black soldier to become an infantry officer in the British army. He was also Britain’s first Black professional footballer too.

Year 9 Football and Peace Project, Day Trip to Maidstone on the 23rd of January

HBHS pupils exmaine school log books

On the 23rd of January 10 Herne Bay High students visited the Maidstone Library and Museum. We started off with a talk on people from World War One and the football truce. There were many activities there to complete such as using a micro-film, looking through copies of school log books to find out information about Walter Tull. We also all read out a timeline of the war and how it affected our local area. At the end we got to look in the archive which was very exciting. We got to see pieces of work hundreds of years old.
We next visited the Maidstone museum. We got taken into a room and we got to listen to two World War One experts and got to examine artefacts from the War such as Christmas boxes and football boots. We also got to study some handmade greetings cards made in France and also the postcards they would have been able to send back home. We also looked at the other cards sent by soldiers some of which had to be destroyed if they had anything written on the back or anything incorrect, as not to give away confidential information if the Germans took it or if it gave away information the public was not meant to know. We discovered the use of propaganda in the war on the posters and how they attempted to get people to enlist. Two of the students got interviewed by the man in charge of the Football and Peace Project. They got asked lots of role play questions and their opinion on how they would feel if a family member went to war. Meanwhile one of the students got to try on the clothing and equipment that a Tommy would have worn thusly being able to understand how the soldiers would have felt physically felt from the clothing.
In the end we got to ask questions on what we did not know from World War One such as would you still find World War One bombs which are completely unexploded.
In the end we all had a great day and got a lot more knowledge on the football truce and various other facts about World War One.

Herne Bay High School Visits Maidstone Museum and Maidstone Kent Library and History Centre

Posted on January 26, 2014 by MD Posted in Herne Bay High School .

Thursday 23rd January ten pupils, Miss Fairbard and Mr Collinson visited Maidstone Museum and Maidstone Kent Library and History Centre as part of their Football and Peace project.

The pupils arrived at the Maidstone Kent Library and History Centre ready to carry out some research on Walter Tull. They did this will the help of Rob Illingworth and his team. They were able to use primary evidence including the use of mirco-film to discover more about Walter Tull’s early life. The pupils were excited to see where the documents were kept in the basement of the centre and were able to visit the archives. The archivist was able to show them how a document could be retrieved using a request she had to find a will. The pupils were amazed at the amount of documents the archive stored. (All eight miles of them!)

In the afternoon the pupils enjoyed a session at Maidstone Museum where they were able to explore many artefacts from WW1. They examined original letters and postcards from the trenches and tried to work out whether the Christmas Truce actually took place. They were able to look at look at a football and a pair of football boots from WW1 and even got to dress up as WW1 soldiers!

A fantastic day was had by all involved.

Coming soon; a pupils account of their day in Maidstone.

Herne Bay High: Football and Peace Project

Posted on January 22, 2014 by MD Posted in Herne Bay High School .

Here, at Herne Bay High we have a group of ten students who are heading up our contribution to the Football and Peace project. We are meeting up every Thursday after school to research and prepare our project.

Our project has many elements to it.

football ww1

Footballers in WW1

Firstly, as a class we visited our local war memorial to get a taste of what World War One has meant to our local community. (See previous posts) Our F+P project group will be contributing to the Imperial War Museum website about local war memorials. We will be trying to provide extra information about the memorial to fill the gaps that the current website has on Herne Bay memorial. Please see this here:
www.ukniwm.org.uk (Ref 1591)

Secondly, we are researching the life of Walter Tull, the first black officer in WW1 and a professional footballer. We have carried out our own research and will be focussing on this at the archives and museum in Maidstone. This will enable the F+P students to put together a lesson that will be teaching other Year 9 students about Walter Tull. This group of students have had experience in teaching lessons before and are looking forward to the challenge and sharing their expertise!

Thirdly, we are welcoming a visitor to Herne Bay High School to speak to us about the role of sport in History. This has been organised through the free speakers for school organisation. http://www.speakers4schools.org/
http://www.speakers4schools.org/speakers/professor-adrian-smith

Hopefully all this work will contribute, not only to the Football and Peace showcase on 25th April but also to a school reception display so all visitors and staff at the school will get a chance to see the fantastic work the students are doing.

Herne Bay High School Year 9 Pupils Visit Herne Bay War Memorial 6/01/14

Posted on January 9, 2014 by MD Posted in Herne Bay High School .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rVtlrQqTO0http://www.youtube.com/embed/8rVtlrQqTO0″On Monday 6th January twenty-seven Year 9 pupils, Mrs Tamplin and I (Miss Fairbard) visited the Herne Bay War Memorial to learn more about how the war affected our local community. We focussed on the style of the war memorial, who commissioned it, when it was built, the materials it was built with and the condition of it. We studied the surroundings and came to the conclusion that the memorial was situated in the appropriate setting, in a tranquil park with easy access to the memorial for members of the public. The pupils studied the names recorded on the memorials and noted down three names of local soldiers who lost their lives in World War One. They also noticed that the last name added to the memorial was from a soldier who lost his life in Iraq.

Pupil Reuben Skeats said  “I found visiting my local memorial  interesting. I learnt about different types of memorials, how they were funded and I was surprised at how many local men lost their lives in this war”

Once back in the classroom pupils completed tasks using the Commonwealth War Graves Commission http://www.cwgc.org/and the Forces War Records http://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/ They used these sites to research the names they recorded from the Herne Bay War Memorial. They also used the Imperial War Museum War Memorial archive http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/ to learn more about their local war memorial.
